The holidays are a wonderful time to really dress up your home with the spirit of the season.  The Simple Feast has come up with a few simple ideas to really make your decorations shine!

BOWLS OF CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS

This is a very simple – and inexpensive – way to add a holiday element to every room.  Buy sets of colored Christmas balls (they usually come 9 to 12 in a box) and arrange them in a bowl as a centerpiece on a table, an added element on an end table, or a quick spruce up to a bathroom.  You can mix varying shades of the same color within the bowl – just make sure that the tops of the balls are facing down so that you get a uniform look on top.  Also mix matte with mirror finishes to make the bowls pop. This is a quick way to make each room glimmer!

CANDLES

What better way to create holiday ambience than with candles around your home.  If you are using scented candles, stick with one scent throughout your home.  Holiday-scented candles set a great mood.  Glass jar candles are an easy way to carry the scent from room to room.

Groupings of pillar candles also work well at the holidays – take a few small glass ornaments and place them at the bottom of the candles for some added shimmer.

Taper candles are great for your food tables, or for added elegance on your fireplace mantel.  Try to arrange the tapers in a grouping of various sizes to really make them standout.

GREENS

You don’t have to be a florist to work with cut greens in your house.  If you are going to have a tree, you will probably have a few branches left over once you cut from the bottom of the tree to get it into its stand.  If not, most florists, farmer’s markets, and tree stands will have bunches of greens for sale. Spread these around on side tables, mantels, or even arranged in vases.  The smell of pine adds a magical element to your home!

LIGHTS

Twinkling holiday lights are a lovely touch and can bring back great memories of past holidays.  Colored lights, or white lights, work equally as well – just make sure that you are consistent throughout your home.  In addition to using lights on your tree, consider using them on your mantel, around your front door, or coiled up in a glass vase on a side table. If you are using automated or blinking lights, make sure that each strand is set to the same setting!

There are no limits to how you can dress up your home for the holiday – you can go all out and decorate every inch – or you can be focused and specific on which areas you want to highlight.  Remember that the choice is yours.  Do what makes you you feel festive!

We can't stop thinking about the film "Julie & Julia," starring Meryl Streep as TV chef Julia Child and Amy Adams as Julie Powell, the food blogger who cooked 564 of Julia's recipes in the span of one year.  The way it captures the joys of cooking, and what it means to people's lives, is "Magnifique!," as Julia would say.  As the Los Angeles Times recently reported, people who've seen the film are signing up for cooking classes in droves, and buying up copies of Julia's cookbooks. However, you don't need special training or instructions for "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" to be like Julia Child.  You just need to get into your kitchen!

With our aprons on and knives in hand, making dishes for a dinner party, is when we most feel like Julia Child. For us, cooking like Julia is about cooking with pleasure and with confidence.  We believe the way to do that is to make easy recipes that are still worthy of being served to guests.  You don't need fancy recipes to make your guests feel like you're serving a fancy meal!  Just try making one of our Dinner Party menus, and you will see what we mean.  From our Simple but Sophisticated and Italian Dinner Party menus, to our Sizzling Steaks and Kabobs and Rack of Lamb feasts, you can't go wrong.  You, too, can bring out your inner Julia with our Recipe Index as your guide.  As Julia would say, "Bon Appetit!"
